Grand Shanghai located at King's Centre prides itself as a unique dining concept featuring authentic Shanghainese specialties. Stepping into the restaurant brings you back to the holden age of Shanghai, as though time stood still.

I visited Grand Shanghai for a birthday dinner for a loved one and to try out a different cuisine, this time to also make use of my $200 dining voucher under the Ala-Carte Dining Program.

We started the dinner off with a basket of complimentary longevity buns, soft steamed fluffy buns filled with white lotus seed paste. We ordered a portion of Shanghainese smoked vegetarian duck which is beancurd sheet wrapped with smoked mushroom and carrot.

We also had the highly recommended Light & Shadow Crispy duck which is a beautiful dish, a malt candy treelike structure with candied crispy duck slices and lotus roots

The appetisers looked better than it taste, they were average.

We also had the recommended premium double-boiled soup. The soup is savory with a tinge of sweetness from the seafood.

We ordered a portion of the Roasted Crispy Pork which is very tender, juicy, had a nice crackling and won't not go wrong with the mustard sauce.

We had a order of the Signature Spicy Chicken with chilli oil and peanut sauce, but they apparently mixed up our orders and gave us the Drunken Chicken with chilled Chinese wine jelly.

Both chicken dishes were not bad, the chicken was moist, tender and juicy. I felt that the spicy chicken did not had the strong oomph that I was looking for. The drunken chicken however was uplifting and the chilled Chinese wine jelly had an interesting texture.

At this moment, I felt that I may have ordered too much. We had a serving of steamed shanghainese pork dumpling. These little dumplings are filled with rich savory soup and the meat fillings were great. The skin was thin but sturdy enough to not split open when lifting.

We ordered a braised cabbage with yunnan ham which is light to the palette and is done quite well.

We ordered a serving of the highly recommended, spiced crispy lamb, served with pancake and their inhouse signature sauce. The lamb was amazing! It's rich, succulent, juicy and quite tender, pair it with the pancake, sauce and its just, enjoyable.

We had a live steam soon hock fish with soy sauce. The fish was done just nice and its extremely fresh. The ee-fu noodles were good too.

The star of the night is definitely the hairy crab. We dined there towards the end of the hairy crab season and are fortunate to be able to have 3 hairy crab to taste.

We tried the recommended wine marinated hairy crab which is a very unique experience. The crab is marinated well with good quality Chinese wine. It is not overpowering, has a nice balance of a punch and the sweetness of the wine.

The traditional steamed hairy crab had a good roe to meat content, the meat is firm and sweet. I last tried hairy crab a few years back, honestly speaking, I am more of a meat person

as compared to roe person. The roe of the hairy crab is definitely different, its rich and creamy roe is just amazing. I would prefer to have mud crab on another day.

All in all, it was an enjoyable and stomach-filling meal. I felt I had ordered too much but everyone just had that extra corner in their tummy to finish the meal. I enjoyed the cumin lamb, the rest of the dishes were pretty standard, I was not totally blown away. I may try their other Shanghainese specialities when I return in future.
